Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
